Basketball back in action in Fiji
On the east and west side of Fiji, the sound of bouncing basketballs can be heard as fans hit the courts.
The Ram Sami National Championships were the first of the 2010 competitions to be held. In late January, men's and women's teams converged on Ed's Court at Raiwaqa for the weekend tournament. He added many teams prepared well for the tournament and this was seen when minor teams were starting to become a threat in the giant teams of Basketball Fiji. “Minor teams are slowly gauging the gap, and they were very competitive.” Puamau said big team Shaq Attack losing to a Western based side and Knights losing to Idaman, was a positive sign for development. “It is good for development to see these teams topple traditional giants.” Meanwhile having some national reps back playing club competitions also provided good competition for young aspiring players. Lautoka, on the western side of the island, commenced their local competition on 30 January with a weekend tournament, while Raiwaqa will be up and running on 6th February. Suva Basketball competitions will get underway on 6th February, making sure that opportunities are available right across the island for basketballers to get out onto the courts. | |
