Donated goods arrive in Solomon Islands

A consignment of basketball equipment sent by FIBA Oceania has recently arrived in Honiara thanks to the assistance of Lawrence Quan and his family business.

A consignment of basketball equipment sent by FIBA Oceania has recently arrived in Honiara thanks to the assistance of Lawrence Quan and his family business.

Quan, a former President of the Solomon Islands Basketball Federation (SIBF) and Treasurer of the National Olympic Committee in the Solomons, maintains a strong love of the sport despite the fact that family and business have taken him away from the sport.

Quan, a winner of FIBA Oceania’s Patricia Ramsay Award for basketball administrators indicated during the equipment handover ceremony that he wanted to support the efforts of the present leadership of the Federation.
Moses Au representing SIBF thanked Quan and FIBA Oceania for providing this practical support to help the new executive of the federation foster interest in the sport.

FIBA Oceania Secretary General Steve Smith, speaking from his office in Coffs Harbour, Australia, stated that he was very happy with the progress made so far by the new committee under the leadership of Don Boykin.

“We’d like to show our support by making this initial donation of equipment to allow SIBF to get on with the job.  We have been talking with President Boykin about some ambitious and long range plans to help improve basketball facilities in and around Honiara so that the federation can arrange activities to suit their sporting calendar not the availability of facilities.”

Among the donation of equipment were basketballs, whistles, rulebooks, nets, drink containers, scorebench equipment and basketball clothing.

FIBA Oceania would like to express its appreciation to Lawrence Quan and QQQ for their assistance in getting the goods safely to Honiara and making them available for the basketball federation to help promote the sport.
